Each summer, Grand Teton’s frontcountry campsites and picnic areas fill with visitors from near and far. With the grizzly and black bear populations increasing in the park, it is more important than ever for campers to properly store food. Bear-resistant food storage lockers, or bear boxes, are high-quality metal lockers spacious enough to fit your largest ice chest. People can open them with ease, yet bears cannot, making these boxes an incredibly effective tool that keeps bears from associating humans as a means to access food. Providing a bear box at each campsite and picnic area enables park visitors to easily secure food and other bear attractants, decreasing interactions between humans and bears and ultimately ensuring Grand Teton’s magnificent bears remain wild.
Plaque recognition is available and once your box is installed you will be notified of its location in the park. We’ll send your gift recipient a teddy bear along with educational information about how to be “bear aware” while visiting Grand Teton. You can fund an entire bear box with recognition for $1,500, or partially fund a box with a gift amount of your choice.
